Possible Book Title

So I'm keeping today's post short because life is crazy, and I may or may not be out of town for a couple days.

I've had this book title swimming around my head for a little while. I mentioned it, in passing, to a writers chat room and got a pretty good response, so I thought I would share it with everyone and see what you think.

By the way, if you want to know what my book's about, click the lovely tab above ^

Are you guys sure you're ready for this?

I'm really not sure I'm ready.

Okay, enough stalling already.

Earth Song

What do you think? I want to hear honest opinions.

I also want to know if anyone has other ideas based on my synopsis? I'm still brainstorming here.

One last thing, I got another blog award!

Yummy, yum!

The very lovely and kind Lyn Midnight over at The Burning of Innocence saw fit to bestow me this award. Thank you so much! If you haven't checked out her blog, you should. She is has an incredible story going on over there that you will defiantly want to read!

To keep it simple I'll tell you three things about me (I'm learning a lot about me right now.) and then I'll pass it on to two other bloggers. Here goes -

1. If it didn't seem so monotonous, every single one of these things would be about food. I love food. Which means I should probably be at the gym rather than sitting in a computer chair.

2. I stared dance when I was three. I quit when I was ten, but then I picked it back up in high school. Now, I just dance around the house like a crazy person. My kids love it! Seriously, they really do love it.

3. My first date with my husband was on Valentines day. He asked me out a month and a half earlier, but circumstance made me unable to go. And, it wasn't the right timing. I didn't like him like that at the time. Anyway, when we finally went out, our date was seven hours long. Best first date EVER!

Here are the two oh-so-sweet bloggers I am bestowing this delicious award on:

The blog of S.J. Wist - Good book reviews and beautiful artwork!

Joshua J Perkey's blog - great read for those of us who are aspiring authors!

So head on over and check them out. Happy Monday all!

Creak

This is very last minute post, but the writer in me had to take up the challenge. Please enjoy the story below based on this image,

That spring could have been the best of my life. Warm and blue, with blossom smells and green lawns. It was a chance for me to take in the great outdoors and learn about the big world that I heard so much about but had never really seen.

Museums, parks, antique shops, the new town I now called my home had it all. In a former life these places would have held my interest, but not now.

The gate stole all my attention, the old broken buildings behind them calling out their history. Every time I came to it my heart would beat faster and my hands would shake, but I couldn't stay away. I had to know about that place. The secret of it haunted my dreams.

The day the wrinkled man stood on its lawn was the day my life would change. I had never seen anyone on the other side of the gate, and I was too curious to let it go.

"Excuse me, Sir? Do know about this place." I ventured in shaking voice.

The old man kept his back turned and his body ridged. It was clear he hadn't heard my call.

I cleared my throat and worked to make my voice the biggest I could muster. "Sir!"

He slowly turned then, really looking at me for the first time. My whole body reacted to the sight of him. My chest tightened, my hands turned sweaty, and goosebumps crawled over my skin.

He had no eyes, just endless dark pits that sucked you into eternity. His clothes where spattered red and torn. A lump caught in my throat as I forced myself to look at all of him. To confirm what I already feared.

For the first time in my life, I saw a ghost.

First steps

The ever so sweet, kind, and Lovely Melanie over at Livin' the Dream is featuring me on her blog for an entire week. A few days ago she asked me some questions so she could highlight me. One of the questions was "What made you want to write a book?"

It's funny because on of my very first posts was on that subject, but it made me realize only close friends and family saw it, and they know me pretty well. I read it again this morning and had an overwhelming desire to share with you. So here goes - Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.

Every child is asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Which really means, how on earth are you going to make a living when you have to pay the bills?

My answers as a child were always varied - astronaut, singer, teacher, actress, scientist, chef, artist, archeologist, etc. Even though, to tell you the truth, my heart wasn't really into any of those things.

The only thing I knew for certain, was that I wanted to be was a mother. It's interesting to think back to what my view of motherhood was then. I thought that when I was a mother I would let my kids eat ice cream whenever they felt like it. I would never make them do any chores, and they would get an allowance just because.

Ha! What a dream world that was. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked - my point here is that I never imagined I would enjoy spending parts of my day writing.

When I was sophomore in high school I had never picked up a book just to enjoy reading. I only read because it was required for an assignment; or because a friend wanted me to read with them. It wasn't until a friend in my math class started ignoring me so she could read Harry Potter (thanks Sarah) that I even considered reading as an enjoyable activity.

Of course, once I was hooked, I had to find out what other books where out there. But, I still didn't enjoy writing. My family often made fun of me because I'm a horrible speller. I've improved over the years, but I used to think writing was about spelling alone. It wasn't until I had an incredible English teacher my senior year that I saw writing in my future.

The first day of class he made us all write a few paragraphs about our writing style. I, thinking the paper would be for his eyes only, wrote about my lack of confidence in my skills.

To my surprise, he took the papers, got up in front of the class, and read all of our little notes to everyone. I was mortified. Even though he didn't name names, except in joking, I was so embarrassed to have what I wrote read aloud.

The teacher had poked fun at some of the kids spelling and grammatical errors, and I was terrified about what he would say to my own humble admission.

I knew the moment he started my paper. Instantly my face turned red and I cowered in my seat. But this teacher read my note tenderly, and never even looked my way. His voice conveyed that he believed I was more capable than I gave myself credit for.

I breathed a sigh of relief. Little did I know that he had set a pattern from that day. A pattern that he would keep the whole semester. He made me feel as if I had something worth writing.

That effected me so deeply that here I am today, attempting to write a book. It has become, to me, something that helps me stay grounded. It release the stresses of my day and brings me full circle to remember who I am.

I'm sharing this with you mostly to remind myself. Sometimes we need to go back and look at those places in our lives where we felt a stirring inside us. Then the question has to be asked, do I feel that now? If not, go back to your roots, find what makes you happy and live it.

It shouldn't be superficial or material, that kind of happiness is temporary. It should be something that you enjoyed living every day. I'm not saying you should quit your job, or travel the world to find yourself. All I'm saying is that everyone should take a few moments in their day and figure out what makes them tick.

I don't mean to say that I have all the answers, because I certainly don't. All I am saying is that writing makes me happy. I feel like the luckiest person in the world that I get to be a mom and to write, neither of which are perfect, but which ultimately bring me moments of joy.

Perseverance

It seems like a lot of my blog posts stem from movies. I really didn't intend it to be that way, sometimes they just speak to me, ya know?

Anywho, the other night I watched an HBO miniseries called Temple Grandin. It's about an autistic girl who learns and does some amazing things.

I have two autistic cousins, so you can imagine how the story affected me. They have an amazing mother who does so much for them. She inspires me!

Back to the movie, after you watch this girl figure out how to deal with her autism, she says something really cool about how her mother pushed her to be better.

The things she overcame are nothing compared to my small task of trying to write a book. In fact Temple Grandin has written several books!

It just goes to show that it doesn't matter who you are, if you work hard enough and let others inspire and guide you, you can accomplish anything!

It just made me realized that I'm not going to stop writing if someone doesn't like it. I'll just take that and work harder. No one accomplished anything worthwhile by taking one shot. They had to develop their talents take rejection and keep going!

That's why I named this blog A Book, A Girl, A Journey, because it's not about a light switch. It's about a process of refining myself to be a better writer and a better person.

If you ever feel like a failure, watch this video, it will keep you going.

What inspires you?

Featured blogger!

So last week while I was feeling a little goofy I entered a contest. The contest was an ingenious game called Blogger-Dash. It's a take on balderdash (one of my personal favorites) except you are creating the definition to those crazy verification words. Somehow my silliness won me the contest and now I am the featured blogger over at Livin' the Dream ! If you want to see a crazy picture of me and also find out what the winning word and definition was, head on over there!

Friday's Inspiration

My mind keeps drifting back to a post I wrote last month entitled Music and All it's Wonderful Power. It's about how music is an inspiration for writers. Lately, I have heard several other writers express the same sentiments. Therefore, I have decided that Fridays shall be song inspiration days.

I will post a video of the song that is inspiring me most for the week, so you can bask in the inspiration as well.

My first choice is Micheal meets Mozart by Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson. You know how every once in a great while an instrumental song hits you more powerfully than words. This song has done that for me. I just discovered it two days ago, but I have been listening to it non-stop while writing. It's truly my muse right now.

You will seriously love it, give it listen.

Didn't that just get your blood pumping? Ah, I love music!

Interview with Bloodlines Author Elizabeth Loraine

Tomorrow is a big day for Bloodlines Author Elizabeth Loraine. The fifth book in her bloodlines chronicles is coming out! To celebrate she is visiting as many blogs as she can. I get the honor of being one of those blogs!

Tomorrow she is ending her tour at Savannah Chase’s blog, www.savannahchase.com. You'll want to go there for a chance to win her books and a $50 Amazon gift card!

About the Royal Blood Chronicles:

Royal Blood Chronicles is a vampire series told by Katrina, a royal blooded vampire who is the chosen leader of the five Protectors as she looks back a hundred and thirty years at how this all began. How five young royal blooded vampires became the protectors of the peaceful races and transform from girls from a life of leisure. Where choosing what to wear and the jewelry and finery to match was all that they had to worry about. From a spoiled, waited on hand and foot existence to becoming, gifted warriors who were brought together by fate and chosen to be the Protectors. It is about their evolution as warriors, women and about those that choose to join them. It’s about trying to find balance in their lives when it seems impossible and their triumphs and tragedies along the way.

About Book 5 Bloodlines

Book Five Bloodline is the continuing story. Katrina finds herself once again fighting the enemy on two continents. The Sanctuaries are in turmoil and are questioning the Protectors loyalty and every time there are small victories it seems a new enemy arises. Katrina and the Five are drawn back to Europe to help Damien and Cain, but can they really trust either of them? And is there something that will finally make Katrina chose between the two loves of her life once and for all?

Onto the interview!

Me: What attracted you to the idea of royal vampire families?

EL: I thought for the romantic aspect of it and that it would be the perfect backdrop for vampires. It’s been around forever and is a private setting, protective and mysterious. People have always been curious about what goes on behind the walls, you never know what you might find there. It’s been as much fun as I thought it would be.

Me: When you wrote the first book, did you ever think you would continue the series?

EL: Yes I did. I thought maybe three books, but quickly I realized that there was so much more to tell about all of them as well as new characters with stories of their own.

Me: What do you think your MC's, Katrina, biggest strength is? Her weakness?

EL: I think she’s always been stronger than she thought she was. Her vampire gifts including those that she denies until she needs to use it. Which is her seemly irresistibly to men of any race. She inherited the ability to know the right thing to do at the right time without over thinking things from her father. I think that helps her tremendously.

Me: Vampires and humans have never seemed to mix well, but you made it work. How did these characters come together?

EL: The long lived vampires desire to survive has integrated them into society. Humans are always their own worst enemies, they react poorly to anything they don’t understand so the vampire race had to be the ones to figure out how to make it work in order to survive.

Me: Your next book, "Bloodline", comes out Tomorrow. Is there anything you want to tell you readers before they dive in?

EL: The story continues, new enemies, new allies and the usual twists and turns along the way. It’s been so fun to write, I really feel like these characters are part of my family now. Quinn fans won’t be disappointed.

Me: Just for fun: Besides vampires, what is your favorite type of fantasy character?

EL: I love elves. I think they are so interesting. The Lord of the Ring movies did a lot for renewing my infatuation with them.

That was a blast! It was total honor to have her here, and I hope we can do it again sometime! GO CHECK OUT THESE BOOKS!

The thing about magic

Hello fellow bloggers! Before I begin, I wanted to let you all know that I am keeping the blog hop open for one more day, so scroll down, check out the peeps, follow them, and give them comment love. I'm sure they will all return the favor!

As you can see from the title, today I'm talking about magic. Last night the hubs and I watched "The Sorcerers Apprentice" it was a little cheesy, but it brought a smile to my face. It also got the wheels turning in my head.

Think of all the movies, books, artwork, and general media that talk about magic. The book I'm writing even has hints of it. Why do think that is? It seems like there's always the good magic, and the bad magic, and the magic always has it certian restrictions. Yet, we gobble it up every time (at least I do).

I have theory about why we like magic so much. Part of it is that we want some. Another part is that we like to think of what could be possible. But I think the real reason we like magic so much is that we want to believe that we can all achieve so much more.

Back to the movie last night. The main character was a nerd. His character was the very definition of the word nerd. At the end, he overcomes his nerdiness enough to become as powerful as Merlin, kill the evil Morgana, and still land the girl.

If that's not reaching, I don't know what is. But you know what? I still put myself in his shoes. I feel like the biggest nerd in the world sometimes. Then I see movies like this and I think if I believe in myself, and work hard enough, maybe I'll be powerful enough to defeat my demons.

It makes me laugh, but at the same time, I feel myself hoping. Who knows what will come in the future? Maybe the X-men theory? Maybe a whole magical world that we are unaware of? Maybe we all have some sort of magical potential that we simply need to unlock? Who knows, but it sure is fun to dream.

Finding my Groove

Yesterday I had no problem writing. I was able to write two thousand words in a little over an hour. It felt good to finally be getting back into the grove of things. It's amazing how your attitude can really affect your writing. One little thing happening during the day can change how you feel when you write. Which, in turn, is translated to the page.

I used to think that having the desire to write was enough. It's not. I have the desire everyday to hone my craft, but that doesn't always translate to the page. Although I am still writing every day, I am also getting easily distracted. (If you've been following me on twitter, you know)

One of the hardest things to do is to turn off those distractions. I love social networking, always have. But there comes a point when you have to let Facebook go and turn your attention on what matters more.

The past few days my writing has gone something like this:

The wind gathered around them, flying in circles and lifting her fingers until she felt she could fly... Oh man, did someone really just say that? I have to give them my opinion. Oh, writing, yes, back to writing... She held onto that feeling, but soon the wind became intense... Yes! I got a new e-mail!

Well, you get the drift. So how did I get over my short attention span and hunger for social media? I turned off the internet. It was the only way. Every time I was tempted to hit that cute little fox curled around the globe, I couldn't - there would be no internet to welcome me.

I didn't just turn it off through my computer either, my modem had to be shut down. Otherwise I'd be hooked up again with just a few clicks. I'm trying this for the next few days as way to train myself to leave the lovely, glowing, internet behind and get back to work!

How about you? What keeps you from getting things done? Share your tricks and tips so we can all learn how to be more productive.

Also, the lovely Catlin Vincent gave me the versatile blogger award! A sincere thank you to her! Check out her blog if have a chance, it's a party over there!

Standing on the Ledge

So for mother's day my mom got me this book -

(source)

I'm only about three chapters in, but completely engrossed. Reading is great way to inspire one to write. I often find when I can't quite get my motor running I turn to books. Only, here's the thing. These books are finished, and finished well. It's hard to sit down and read a book that is smoothly written. It makes me feel like it's not even worth it to continue on writing.

Then I read this on the Acknowledgment page "To my first readers ... for their love and support, and for talking me off the ledge at regular intervals."

This spoke to me. This seemingly flawless novel was once a first draft. This wildly popular Author had to be talked off the edge!

I often need the same kind of support, and you guys are the ones giving it to me. I'm not sure I would be working so hard to finish this Novel if I didn't have the support I'm finding right here. Thanks for being great readers and helping me to overcome my weaknesses!

On a related note, I received another blogger award *jumps up and down, clapping hands* Thank you so much Sophi lee! You can find here incredibility witty blog here. You'll want to check this girl out, she is a Hoot!

I want you all to feel like you got this award, so I'm not passing it on to anyone in particular. If you want to grab it go ahead - you all deserve it! I'm also not writing my seven random things. If you really want to know, you can look here or here.

Thanks for the love!

Motherhood, a work of flash fiction.

I know, I know mother's day is over. You've seen every last blog post you can handle on the subject. If you hear the word mom one more time, your going to denounce the celebration for the rest of your life. Well, be prepared to denounce. I wasn't going to do this. I realize how painstakingly late it is, but I just had to share.

I wrote this on mother's day as a way to remember one small thing I love about my children. It begged to written, and now it begs to be shared. I'm sure it's full of flaws, but it's time for me to share some of my work with you. So here goes - Motherhood, a work of flash fiction.

I am nearly asleep when I hear the blood curdling scream. The first reaction at that ungodly hour is that someone has died. It's the kind of scream that instantly carries me from my dream land to the confused existence of awake.

In such a state, it takes a few moments for realization to dawn. No one has died. It's only the baby screaming for attention. I think about rolling over. I consider pressing the pillow to my ear and dropping back into my sweet oblivion. She screams again.

"Okay, okay." I say, to psyche myself into getting up. I drag my feet and hang my head, hoping somehow alertness with fly into my eyes from out of some dim hiding place. I get to her doorway and press my ear. I haven't heard so much a squeak for the past minute.

Maybe she went back to sleep! I think, happiness filling my breast. I nearly run back to the soft folds of my sheets. My body aches for the place where the warmth will never ask for anything, only let me seep into its happy haven.

I'm back at my bedroom door when she screams again. No such luck. I hobble over to her room, exasperation filling me to the core. I don't want to be angry, but I am. What kind of child wakes their parents at two a.m.?

I swing open her door, ready to show her who's boss around here. Ready to let her know we will have no more early morning screaming sections. I glare in her direction. She stands in her crib, wide blue eyes staring happily in my direction. Her soft blond hair sticking out like a baby bird's feathers. Her blanket, pillow, and two bears are strewn across the floor. She's been busy throwing everything she can on the floor. It's the only way she can express her need to be out of the crib.

We look at each other, and she jumps up and down as if she ready to play. I, however, am not entertaining any such notions. I take a step into the room, "Hi." She says in her sweet, high-pitched, fifteen-month-old voice. I'm not ready to give in, yet. After all, it is still two in morning.

I pull her out of the crib and turn her sideways to check her diaper. It's clean. Why on earth are you awake? I think. She giggles. I'm not falling for that one either. This child will go back to bed.

I set her on the floor as I reassemble the strewn accessories. When all is ready I pick her back up. She grabs me tight and pats my back. Her head rest softly on my shoulder and I take in a breath of her sweet baby smell. She murmurs some soft noise that makes my heart melt. It's enough to almost crack my hard shell and let her stay up, but the need for a few more hours of sleep wins out.

I gently place her in the crib and watch as she huddles under her blankie, peeking at me for any sign of forgiveness. "Goodnight Madeline" I whisper, stroking her face. She contentedly rolls over to hug her bear, not a care in the world. Oh the days of innocence! If only I could return.

I tiptoe out of the room and sigh. I find that I'm grinning widely, foolishly. Yes, I am glad she is going back to bed. I am glad she will let me sleep just a little while longer. I am glad she has not put up a fight, but the real reason I smile is because know I have a little girl who loves me. Even if she wakes me up at two a.m. to tell me so.

More Love!

I hope everyone had a fantastic mother's day weekend! I know I did, thanks to an incredibly awesome husband who cleaned the house and let me have a girls night out. (I know you're all jealous!)

To start off another fantastic Monday (I like Mondays, and yes I am aware that I am strange. I'm also a morning person.) I have gotten another award from a totally cool blogger who is probably way more deserving than me! Check out Cherie over at Ready.Write.Go this chicka is hilarious! If you need a pick-me-up I suggest heading on over there.

Now for the award:

Of course there are also some rules that go along with the honor. They are as follows:

1. Thank and link to the person who nominated me.
2. Share seven random facts about myself.
3. Pass the award along to 5 new-found blogging buddies.
4. Contact the winners to congratulate them.

Now I have to think of 7 more random things about myself, so you better be prepared for the randomness.

1. My favorite cereal is Chocolate Marshmallow Maties (it's a guilty pleasure)
2. If I had time, I would probably play Zelda on a daily basis (go Ocarina of Time!)
3. I'm a closet Twilighter (Don't hate me! I simply appreciate how Stephenie Meyer can suck a reader in despite poor editing, and it's a good story)
4. I have two goldfish who have been alive for almost two years (I don't know why they continue to live, I don't even feed them half the time.)
5. My families yearly vacation is rafting the Green River (3 day stillwater float) no joke. I can tough it outdoors.
6. My favorite color is pink.
7. I have a terrible fear of heights.

So there you have it, me at my randomness. I'm giving away this awesome award to the five stylish people listed below.

1. Ashely - The bookish Brunette
2. L. Carrol - Lor Mandela
3. Amy - A Twisted Writers thoughts
4. Kathryn - Bumblebee
5. Mel - Writings, musings, and other such nonsense.

One last thing before I go. I just had to share this too cute pic of my little boy on mother's day. Love!
(He's holding a car, but I cropped it out. lol!)

Have a great day!
