Challenge Time!

Alright folks, it's time for another challenge from Rach Writes. Here are the rules -

Write a blog post in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, whether flash fiction, non-fiction, humorous blog musings, poem, etc. The blog post should:
  • include the word "imago" in the title
  • include the following 4 random words: "miasma," "lacuna," "oscitate," "synchronicity,"
If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional and included in the word count), make reference to a mirror in your post.
For those who want an even greater challenge (optional), make your post 200 words EXACTLY!
Ready for the challenge? Here we go!

Imago Sunset

"Listen up! We have one more sweep and then we're done. This time no one better oscitate along the way. Grange just got his stomachpumped; I can't imagine he'll be better anytime soon."

The group of men nod but I raise my hand. "Sir,wouldn't a mask be helpful on this expedition? I've heard of others talkingabout the miasma ---"

"Do you really believe in those fools tales?" Thecommander says, spitting. "Quit acting like a child."

I straighten my spine and set my jaw "Yes sir."

The troop marches in pairs out of the cave and into thecicada infested night, extermination guns in hand.

The sweep starts out as planned, each pair taking a sectionuntil the bugs no longer blanket the sky.

"What is that?" My partner asks.

I look up and see the cicada separate out forming a large, empty, circle in the night.

"Lacuna, the miasma formation…" I whisper.

My partner turns to me, "What?"

"This is no accident. Look, they're dividing intomirror images with perfect synchronicity. We're too late!"

"You mean ---"

"I mean the imago has occurred. If we don't leave now,we will be their next meal."

I'm #48 if you want to vote for me *nudge*

New follower here, going backwards up up the list. This is the first scary one I've read. Very tense, leaves a big lacuna in the pit of my stomach. I'm number 52 on the list.

You are a brave girl and this is good. I would never take on a challenge like this. I tend to fall in Stephen King's camp about only writing in vocabulary you know:)

This is my kind of story. I bet his partner gets eaten :-)

Nice! I can totally visualize this. I love the killer-cicada concept!

I liked this a lot too, but it's Imago, not Imango.

@Cat oops! My mistake. Thank you Cat!

Oh no! Not the cicadas!

After this past summer I have a healthy fear of cicada swarms. One day my brother shook a couple of bushes in his yard and a MASSIVE swarm of cicadas flew out. Terrifying, I tell you. Absolutely terrifying.

I changed cicadas to fluffy bunnies in my imagination to avoid nightmares. Cicadas are so so so sooo gross, poor guy was probably a red shirt too.

Scary! I just wanted to tell the MC, follow your instincts! Bring your mask! This was well done.

Eek! I agree, cicadas creep me out, especially en masse. Now could you please write this as a novel? I want to know the rest of the story

Sounds a little scary and very suspenseful! Makes me wonder what an Imago really is. :) Great post!

I am incredibly late responding to this. This is super! Awesome dialogue. Creeper factor is there. Loved your sci-fi. Kinda had a Starship Troopers feel to it. You've got my sci-fi vote!

Great job, Jennie! :)
