March Madness Day 14

March has been crazier than I ever expected it to be. I thought getting 30,000 words would be a breeze compared to the 50,000 I did in November, but it's proved to be a harder challenge than I imagined.

As of right now I've written 12,000 words. I'm almost halfway there and halfway through the month. I can do this right? But the thing is, I'm easily distracted.  My house is a mess, or the book I'm reading is too good, and I just can't put it down.

I know, my excuses are lame. I can be better. I need to be better. So here's my question for you -

Are you struggling to write as well? If so what are you doing to push through it?

Everyone have a great Wednesday, we'll see if I get any writing done seeing as I'll be hosting 11 eight-year-olds for scouts in a couple of hours. Heaven help me.

Well, I don't have as much trouble writing as I have revising and editing, and that is where I am at the moment. I still haven't found a good way to make sure it gets done, but I promised myself I would be done by the end of this month. I don't see it happening at the moment. :(

OMG I'm right there with you! The weather here has turned unseasonably warm, so I feel like I HAVE to be outside with the kids... thank goodness for my notebook, but it is putting me behind on my word count goal.

Mini-deadlines help me a lot. I set a daily word count for myself, and I keep track in an Excel spreadsheet, so when I don't make it it mocks me until I get back on track (yup, it mocks me. With funny voices and everything).

Good luck!

You give a whole new meaning to March Madness! I hope you can squeeze in some writing today. Even getting a little bit done helps keep our writing spirits up ...

I'm not currently having any writing issues as I'm waiting for beta feedback, but I agree with Tobi--when I'm writing I set a daily word count goal and force myself to stick to it. Even if you do miss a day, knowing that you only have to do x-amount of extra words to catch up again can be helpful.

Also, Write or Die and #wordmongering help a lot. :)

I have major issues revising, in fact this is a re-write becasue the issue were so huge. not sure if I'm ever going to get this done.

I so know what you mean! I don't like to hand write so I end up not doing anything when the weather is warm. Luckily it's been windy and cold here lately, lol!

lol! I have a daily word count goal as well, I normally reach it, but the problem is finding the time (and energy) to sit down and write.

So true! I actually did some writing yesterday and it restored my confidence a tad, then again I might have to delete everything I did yesterday, sigh.

I've been using both and they do help, but I can't ever seem to get anyone to write with me. It's not as fun if I don't have companions pushing me on!

Oh gosh, I was struggling a bit, till I got a partner in crime with this month. We said we'd exchange manuscripts at the end of them month... so yikes! Better have one for her to read!

That's enough motivation right now. But there is always Mountain Dew. :)

I've been really tired lately, but I've been forcing myself to write anyway because I'm on a deadline. Sounds like you're doing pretty good on your goal, though. Don't beat yourself up! You're doing great. :)

My writing has been up and down lately. When I reach a particular road block, I spend hours pushing through it to get to the other side. I'm not someone who leaves projects undone, so when I start something, I finish it. No matter what.

Good luck with your writing. There are so many distractions, sometimes it's impossible to stay focused.

OH MY GOSH! It's like we're living the same life. I feel exactly the same way. I'm trying so hard to finish this WIP and I didn't think it'd be too hard to finish this month, but it is. My "to do list" just keeps growing and my house is a mess too!

I've been trying to schedule a few hours a day to work on the house and then allow myself a few hours at night to write. It's coming along, but not as quickly as I'd like.

Your post made me realize that it really is half way through March! AHAH!!
I have been feeling that it's super hard to get through my novel with so much going on. The time I would normally dedicate to writing is filled with internet research/blogging/and what not. Which isn't a good excuse. I need to go somewhere without internet.

I'm also trying to write in a journal as much as possible so I can actually say I'm editing my book. All the rewrites go in there. Too bad I have to write an essay over spring break or I could dedicate that time to my book. :/

Good luck with writing!! Or finding the time, and pushing away those distractions!

I'm with Ashley. We're halfway through March already? Wow. Time flies.

12,000 words in two weeks is pretty good, challenge or not. Those pesky, pesky books being too good. You should make a satirical complaint to the author!

What I wouldn't give to receive a complaint like that from someone. Ha ha.

Anyway, good luck. c:

Oh my gosh. 11 eight year olds! Girl, no wonder you can't write as much as you want to!

Perhaps they'll entertain themselves and you'll have time to write??

HA! :)

What are you reading that you can't put down???? Inquiring minds want to know.

Keep going, you can do it! (Oh my gosh, I really need to clean too) See there's my ADD when it comes to writing too. Keep pressing on! Good luck with the girl scouts - yikes.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

But that is probably a lot more than you would've done if you hadn't challenged yourself, right?

M Pax said...

I have not joined march madness, but I need to get on it. Congrats on your 12,000. All them boys is craziness on a large scale.

Your progress is commendable and you'll succeed.

One way to push through is to give yourself mini-rewards. You can encourage yourself to write as much as you can or give yourself a goal then when you meet that goal, you can grab one of your distractions and read a limited amount of pages then stop, repeat and do it all over again. Reading can be awarding in more than one way.

You can TOTALLY do this!

I'm determined to finish my revisions this month. My tricks to staying focused is to write first, everything else later. (You know, within reason. You should shower (at least a couple times every week, right? Eat something. Feed your family (if you're opposed to eating out every night). Otherwise, I say write first!

Good luck!
