Most of the time, I wouldn't recommend unfollowing at all, but sometimes it's necessary. Just make sure you use caution and judgement before unfollowing anyone.
Here's the reasons I would unfollow someone's blog:
1. They post more than once a day, almost every day. This spams my google reader, I don't like it. there's nothing you have to say that makes me want to listen to you that much. I hate to put it so bluntly, but that's the truth.
2. No matter how much I've gone to their blog, they never once come to mine. Did you just want me to follow you to make your numbers look good? That's not why I followed you, so I won't be coming back.
3. Someone is outright hostile on their blogs. I don't need negativity in my life, and I don't want to read about it. Plus, if you're that rude to other people, how do you feel about me?
Thank goodness these types of blogs are the exception and not the rule. I've only had to unfollow half a dozen blogs these last two years. Most bloggers are fantastic. No one deserves to be unfollowed 'just becasue' but sometimes it's needed.

Yes, for the second and third reasons. I've also unfollowed some that went dormant. I discovered that when someone gives up his blog, a company can snatch the address, keeping the followers, and start spamming ads. They usually remove the GFC widget, which is annoying, so it's difficult to unfollow.
Those are all good reasons to unfollow. Now I just need to use by Google reader in time for it to go away. lol
I have unfollowed a blog before. Before my writing days I was a big crafter wannabe, and I read a ton of those blogs, but as writing (and writing blogs) have take over more of my life I have unfollowed a few of the craft ones to get them off my feed. I felt guilty about it, at the time, but once I unfollowed I hadn't been on their blogs for over a year.
I do unfollow on twitter if the posts are overly negative, only self-promotional, or if they tweet so much it takes up my entire feed. (And yes, I do feel bad about it, even when my feed is better.)
I need to weed out some of the blogs that I follow, for the above reasons. Like Alex, I noticed that at least one turned into an advertising blog.
Play off the Page
Hostility is the fastest way to get me to dump a blog. There are some blogging gurus whose primary hobby is bashing anything they've seen. It's not useful to my life.

I will rarely unfollow officially, although I may quit frequenting if the posts aren't worth my time. My two main reasons to unfollow officially would be if the posts went a direction I found morally offensive (hate posts or something radical) or if, like Alex mentioned, they quit posting.
You have encouraged me to check to make sure I visit my commenters blogs. Sometimes I get so busy, that I forget!

I actually added a ton of blogs to my Bloglovin feed when I first started through hops, link ups and the A-Z Challenge. However, lately I've been unfollowing ones I tend to never read because their topics don't relate to me at all. It's decluttering my feed and making it less overwhelming.
Wow, I hadn't heard about companies snagging old blogs... I'll have to look out for that.
Hmmmmm, I've unfollowed blogs, but I'm trying to remember why. I think it was mostly because I realized I didn't relate to their posts.
I unfollow for blogs that don't post often. I like to check reader once a day.
I've unliked a few pages on Facebook for extremist Israel-bashing posts and one-sided "intactivist" (i.e., EXTREMELY anti-circumcision) posts. I really felt uncomfortable being in a group where posts and comments like "Let's bomb Israel!" and "Parents who circumcise their sons should be arrested for child abuse!" got like 50 likes. It felt so good to unlike them. I liked those pages before the admins showed their true off-topic colors. I'd unfollow a blog for similar reasons, if I went in thinking it were about one subject and then suddenly all the writer ever posted about was something completely off-topic from the stated original focus.
I'm glad you haven't unfollowed me yet! I can be a whiny little B-word sometimes!
I've only unfollowed one or two people. Mostly because of bad language.
I don't think I've ever listed why I've unfollowed blogs before. These are really good points. Michael & Emily provide some reasons why I unfollow too.
I've never unfollowed a blog but I've wanted to for a few that have gone dormant. Here's my embarrassing secret though: I can't figure out how! Until I do I guess I'll never unfollow a blog.
Unfollowing is part of twitter. If you contact someone several times and they don't follow back, it shows they're not interested.

I don't think I've unfollowed anyone yet. I think.
It's more of the reason why I won't follow a blog which is mainly because it bores me or the person hasn't written anything in a really long time. Something big would have to happen to make me unfollow someone.
But multiple posts in one day is annoying. Hello you're blogging not tweeting.
I'll unfollow someone if, after I've followed them and left comments trying to connect, they don't return the follow. I blog for the connection and the relationships, so I figure they aren't interested in those things and I move on.
I've unfollowed some people--most of them were because there weren't any new posts being put up.
I've had multiple posts a few times, but mostly when I'm doing something like blogging a-z and it just doesn't fit with my regular schedule. I have regular topics for Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, so I went ahead with two posts on those days. Mostly it's 4-7 times a week.

I totally agree with you! I think I've only unfollowed one or two blogs. But in the end, I still adore all bloggers. :)
I spent an hour once trying to unfollow a blog that had been overtaken by a spammer as Alex mentioned. I'm far more likely to unfollow on Twitter, especially if every tweet is a curse or tirade. I have much too little free time to squander it trying to avoid bigots and haters.
I've unfollowed a blog before, if the content isn't what I thought it was. That's a "it's me, not you" scenario. I've cut back recently on blog posts due to other issues. I didn't do the A-Z this year, because last year I fell way behind on comments. I felt bad, so I didn't participate this year due to my schedule of activities.
I've unfollowed a few, but most of those have been because the bloggers have disappeared. The exceptions have actually been for the reasons you've listed. I guess we're on the same page there.
I've never unfollowed - I'm pretty choosy about the people I follow, to be honest. I check out their blog to decide if they'll offer me something fun. There are a couple that I tend not to read that often, because they've changed the style/content of their blog OR because I followed them in the early days when I felt I ought to follow everyone who followed me.
I have unfollowed a couple of blogs for reasons #1 and #3. One of them qualified for both reasons.
